GPX guide
Download a GPX file from Strava
Strava’s phone app does not export GPX. Use strava.com on a computer or mobile browser, export the activity file, then animate it into an MP4 in Vianim.
How it works
- 1
Open strava.com in a browser
Sign in at strava.com. On a phone, type the address yourself so you stay in the browser instead of jumping into the app. Desktop site works best for the export menu.
- 2
Open your activity
Go to the activity you own (your feed or Training → Activities). Only your own activities can be exported.
- 3
Export GPX
Open the ⋯ (Actions / More) menu on the activity page and choose Export GPX. The .gpx file downloads. Then upload it in Vianim to preview and export a cinematic route video.
Strava Flyover versus a downloadable route video
Strava subscribers can play a 3D Flyover inside the Strava app and share it to Stories or via link. Strava’s help docs describe sharing that experience — they do not offer Flyover as a downloadable MP4 you can keep in a video editor.
If you need a route video file for YouTube, Reels, or an NLE timeline, export GPX from the website and convert it with a map animator like Vianim. You get a cinematic 3D flyover you own, in 16:9 or 9:16.
Privacy tips before you export
GPX exports include the recorded path. If the activity starts at home, crop the start in Strava before exporting, or trim the route in your editor after render. Privacy zones that hide your house on the Strava map do not rewrite the exported GPX file.
Activity photos are not inside the GPX. Bring those separately if you plan to cut them into the final film alongside the map sequence.
FAQ
- Why can’t I export GPX from the Strava app?
- Strava exposes Export GPX on the website activity page. The mobile apps are built around viewing and sharing inside Strava, not downloading the raw track file.
- Can I download my Strava Flyover as a video?
- No. Flyover can be viewed and shared inside Strava’s products, but it is not provided as an MP4 download. Export GPX and convert it if you need a video file.
- What do I do with the GPX after download?
- Upload it to Vianim, preview the 3D route animation, and export an MP4 for social or your edit. You can also try the Dolomites sample route first to learn the studio controls.
